Day Dreamer

I neeeeed to get outside! Three exams down, two to go (in FOUR days. yah.) I'm getting somewhat restless, you could say. I'm not really used to this midterm business, I would say it is the one major difference in structure between the courses here and at home. Ah well, after this week it won't be too bad, I'll live.
The above picture is of a house on (the other end) of our street- how crazy! I want to live there, please. Casual castle, in the middle of downtown, why not? I am alternatively dreaming about being outside all day instead of stuck inside studying (then I remember that it is FREEZING, and its not so bad) and about my life as a princess in this castle. Both reasonable, right?
The once or twice I've been away from the library this week has been for a run in Point Pleasant Park, isn't it... pleasant?
Hanging out for the end of this week, halloween celebrations and less stress sound pretty sa-weet right now. Also thinking of my amazingly talented and smart friend Nicky at home, handing in her epic honours thesis this week- so proud of you.
This is my 'excited for Nicola I want to give her a big squishy hug' face. As I said- I need to get out. ;) x

Explosion!

All this week there has been yet another festival happening around here- Halifax Pop Explosion! I've been introduced to many different mostly-local bands, and explored new venues and places in my little city along the way! Highlights included the Glory Glory's, the Elwins, Elliot Brood, Wintersleep and Deer Tick- some seriously awesome tunes, and some wicked live shows!
Some tunes for your day. x

What lurks in the night

This past Saturday the city of Halifax lit up at night with the art festival Nocturne. There were different art, photography and design exhibitions, street music, light displays, giant tetris and a million other things going on everywhere. I really love how much there always is going on in my new little city!

A change of season

Fall. It has arrived in all it's leave changing, wind blowing, pumpkin eating, sweater wearing glory. It is cold. So cold. I am currently wearing about a billion layers and still not feeling cozy enough. How the hell will I survive winter, you ask? I ask myself this every day. I am hoping that I will somehow acclimatise- my thin, sensitive, sun-loving Australia skin will develop some kind of special Canadian wind-shield, frost-proof armour. Judging by the bare arms and legs I still see walking around without a care in the world, it definitely exists.

These are some photos from last weekend which was thanksgiving long weekend. We had an amazing road trip up to Cape Breton Island, about 5 hours north of here. We went hiking, stayed in cozy wooden cabins, had bonfires, roasted marshmallows, listened to Celtic music (the heritage up there is Gallic) and discovered million-coloured birch trees, cheeky squirrels, majestic pines, rugged coast, flowing waterfalls and MOOSE. Amazing.

Amazing. x

One fine day

A few weeks ago we had a glorious, sunny, clear day. With the chill now creeping through my bones it feels like an age ago. Luckily we made the most of it with a day trip out of the city to the iconic lighthouse and fishing village at Peggy's Cove, less than an hour away.

Before I arrived here and looked up pictures of Halifax and nova Scotia, this little town and it's white and red lighthouse cropped up everywhere. It really is a gorgeous little spot- crawling with tourists but still lovely and sleepy- feeling, and a relaxing place to spend a beautiful day off.

We took our time stopping at little hidden spots along the way, and had a lazy fish and chips lunch. This was our very first trip out of Halifax- exciting!- and we had a gorgeous day.

New Sounds

One thing I love discovering when in a new place is the music. Lucky for me- Halifax has an amazing live music scene, which we have explored a little bit, but I can't wait to see more! As I mentioned in the last post, we went to the Summer Sonic festival, which was amazing- such a great atmosphere and amazing musicians (<3 Ben Harper!). But we've also been to a few more casual shows- there are lots of live mic nights and local bands playing which have been really great. Then on Thursday night a friend of ours invited us to come along to a proper concert at a local music hall, by Canadian folk band, Great Lake Swimmers. The lead singer has an amazing voice and they have a wicked banjo player.

So for anyone looking for something relaxing and beautiful, check them out!
